Halloween Apple Celebration is an old but in the same time funny and dangerous custom. On a hanging horizontally from the ceiling stick, people tied a string. On one side of the stick an apple was hung and on the other a lighted candle. Then they spinned around the stick and than left it to untwist on its own. At the same time the people had to beat the apple without using their hands. Very often the candle flamed their faces but the people had lots of fun while playing.
Apple bobbing is very old but still popular Halloween sport. The people use to bob down inside the tub to catch an apple which was floating away. Some even tried stick in an apple a fork dropped from high into the tub.
It was believed that if a young girl eat an apple at midnight and looked in a glass, she would be able to see her future husband. Other legend says that if a girl cut an apple in two pieces and throw one over her left shoulder for her lover, than while eating the other piece of the apple, should walk backwards toward a mirror. She should comb her hair before reach the mirror and when look back she may see the face of her future fiancé.
Halloween Fire rituals were widely spread, too. In Scotland and Ireland people used to start the Halloween celebrations with fires on the hills. The fires were known as “Halloween Bleeze”. Circular trenches were made around these bonfires as a symbol of the sun.
In other parts in the country, each household competed with the others to have the biggest bonfire. When the fire dies down, people made circles from the dust ashes and place a stone for each member of the family. It was believed that if a stone was displaced or seemed like broken, the person to whom it belongs may die. In north Wales each family lighted bonfires called “Coel Coeth”. Each member threw a white stone in the fire with his name into the ashes. Early in the next morning each one had to find his stone. If a stone is missing, it was believed that the person it belonged to would die till the next Halloween.
